KPM Linear Sensor Applied to Hydraulic Jacks in Structural Monitoring

The Challenge: Detecting Hidden Displacement Inside Walls

In structural engineering and building maintenance, hydraulic jacks are often used as load-bearing or correction devices embedded directly inside concrete or brick walls. Once installed, these jacks are no longer visible or manually accessible — yet knowing exactly how much the jack has displaced at any given moment is critical to structural safety assessment.

The customer in this case faced a precise and demanding requirement: a 10-ton capacity hydraulic jack was embedded inside a brick wall, and the engineering team needed real-time, accurate displacement data without any physical access to the jack itself.

The Solution: SOP KPM 50mm Linear Displacement Sensor

After evaluating several measurement options, the customer selected the SOP KPM 50mm Linear Displacement Sensor for the following reasons:

• Compact form factor — the KPM's slim, rod-style body fits alongside the jack in a confined wall cavity without requiring extra space
• High resolution & linearity — consistent, repeatable readings even in slow-movement structural applications
• Robust construction — the rugged housing withstands dust, vibration, and static load pressure typical of embedded wall environments
• Simple signal output — compatible with standard data acquisition systems used in structural monitoring rigs

As visible in the installation photo, the sensor body is mounted directly adjacent to the hydraulic jack. A metal bracket fixes the sensor's reference point to the wall frame, while the sensor rod connects to the moving part of the jack. When the jack extends or compresses — whether due to active correction or passive structural load — the sensor rod follows the movement and instantly converts it into an electrical signal.

How It Works

The system requires no manual inspection of the embedded jack. All displacement data is captured continuously and can be logged over time, allowing engineers to detect creep, settlement, or sudden shifts that might indicate structural risk.

The customer reported that the KPM sensor integrated seamlessly with their existing DAQ system and required minimal calibration on-site. The compact design was specifically highlighted as a decisive factor — competing sensors were either too long or too fragile for the confined wall installation.

Why SOP KPM for Embedded Structural Applications?
